Wide receivers coach Hubbard Alexander and defensive line coach Sam Clancy were let go by the New Orleans Saints.

The Saints did not renew their contracts but are keeping the seven other position coaches.

Joe Horn, the team's top receiver, said Alexander was being unfairly blamed for the Saints' 8-8 season.

``I'm infuriated,'' Horn told The Times-Picayune. ``That's basically slapping me in the face, saying my receivers coach didn't get the job done. ... Why use my mentor as the scapegoat?''

No timetable has been set to fill the openings, team spokesman Greg Bensel said.

Seven assistants received two-year extensions: Dave Atkins (running backs), Joe Baker (safeties), Greg Brown (cornerbacks), Al Everest (special teams), Winston Moss (linebackers), Bob Palcic (tight ends) and Mike Sheppard (quarterbacks).

Alexander and Clancy learned of the decision during their postseason meeting with coach Jim Haslett. Haslett confirmed the moves but declined comment.

Alexander was not immediately available when The Associated Press called his home Wednesday.

Clancy said, ``They had to do what they think is best. I know my situation -- four rookies -- it was a little tough trying to deal with four rookies. There's no hard feelings.''

Five of the seven defensive linemen who played in the Saints' 13-7 win against Dallas on Sunday were rookies or second-year players, including No. 1 draft picks Charles Grant and Johnathan Sullivan.
