Tom Glavine's biggest problem was that he spent too much time on the basepaths.
The New York Mets' left-hander was on base three times, driving in a run with a single, reaching on a sacrifice bunt and an error, and drawing a walk.
When he wasn't running around, Glavine pitched six solid innings to help the Mets snap the San Diego Padres' six-game winning streak with a 6-2 victory.
``It was hot out there,'' Glavine said. ``It was one of those situations where I probably had one more inning in terms of how I felt physically. It was hot out there and running the bases takes its toll.''
Danny Garcia hit his first homer of the season for the Mets, who avoided a three-game sweep and completed a 3-6 road trip.
Glavine (4-1) allowed five hits, struck out six and walked one. He earned his 255th win, passing Red Faber and Jack Morris for sole possession of 38th place on the career list. Glavine also improved to 21-11 lifetime against the Padres.
``Through the years he has been Mr. Consistency. He makes you swing at pitches
that you normally would not swing at,'' San Diego slugger Brian Giles said.
David Weathers and Mike Stanton each pitched a scoreless inning of relief, and Braden Looper worked a perfect ninth.
Ismael Valdez (3-1) allowed five runs and seven hits in five innings. The Padres had won eight straight home games.
Glavine helped himself in the Mets' three-run second inning with an RBI single off Valdez. Karim Garcia opened the inning with a double and scored on Shane Spencer's single.
Mike Cameron doubled, moving Spencer to third, and Vance Wilson hit a sacrifice fly. After Danny Garcia flied out, Glavine came through with a two-out single to left, scoring Cameron.
The Padres got a run back in the bottom half on back-to-back doubles by Phil Nevin and Jay Payton.
``My mind-set that second inning was pretty much to keep it to one run,'' Glavine said. ``When you get a three-run lead like that, the last thing you want to do is turn around and have a big inning. Once they got the one run, my mind-set was to try to keep it right there.''

After giving up the doubles, Glavine got Brian Buchanan, Jay Payton and Miguel
Ojeda on groundouts.
Spencer, who had three singles, drove in his second run in the third with a single that scored Todd Zeile, who doubled leading off.
The Padres made it 4-2 in the third on a sacrifice fly by Mark Loretta that scored Sean Burroughs, who tripled down the left-field line leading off the inning.
Danny Garcia walked leading off the fourth and went to third on successive bunts. He scored on Zeile's groundout for a 5-2 Mets lead.
After going 9-14 last season, Glavine has a 1.85 ERA through six starts.
``Last year was an aberration,'' Mets manager Art Howe said. ``He's been terrific this season. He makes so many quality pitches. When he came in after the sixth inning I asked him how he was and he told me, `I'm a little tired, but I can give you one more inning.'''
The Mets pinch-hit for Glavine in the seventh and loaded the bases, but KazMatsui struck out to end the inning.
Notes
New York's Mike
Piazza, tied with Carlton Fisk for most career homers as a catcher (351), played
first base and went 0-for-4 with an intentional walk. He also made some fine
plays in the field, particularly on throws tofirst. ... Giles doubled to extend
his hitting streak to six games.
