Jim Thome was back in Philadelphia's lineup against Arizona on Sunday after sitting out a game because of a cortisone shot.

Thome didn't play Saturday because he got the shot in his left thumb Friday night.

``Everything's fine,'' Thome said before Sunday's game. ``I wasn't really feeling good the last couple of days. I feel good and I'm in the lineup.''

Thome got the shot because he wasn't going to play against Diamondbacks lefty Randy Johnson. The Phillies have an off day Monday, giving Thome an extra day of rest.

Thome is hitting .364 with seven home runs and 13 RBI on the season.

Long-time baseball executive Syd Thrift announced his retirement on Sunday.

Working as a consultant with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, Thrift was a former general manager of the Pittsburgh Pirates from 1985-88.

"All of us across major league baseball involved in scouting and player development owe Syd a debt of gratitude for his creative thinking and innovative ideas," said Devil Rays general manager Chuck LaMar.

Thrift is perhaps best known for founding the renowned Kansas City Royals Baseball Academy in Sarasota, Florida which produced 14 major leaguers, including eight-time Gold Glove winner Frank White.

Thrift also worked as an executive with the Oakland Athletics, New York Yankees, Chicago Cubs and Baltimore Orioles and was a consultant with the Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Mets and San Francisco Giants. He joined the Devil Rays as a consultant in February 2003.
